If Byzantine art is all Greek to you and Early Christian art sounds like a contradiction in terms (weren’t they all too busy being eaten by lions?), then this could be an illuminating evening for you. And yes, there will be some painted, but no ‘illuminated’, manuscripts (they come later).
This talk will aim to show how European art evolved from the fourth to the eighth century and how many of the formulae devised to put across messages and tell stories in pictures at this early stage are familiar to us today from the art of the Renaissance and later.
Come prepared to be challenged and take part in some visual analysis (optional, but fun).
