Event Details

Founded in 1731, The Gentleman’s Magazine was the world’s first magazine, reporting domestic and foreign news, announcing the latest discoveries in science, medicine and technology, reviewing books and recording freak weather, births, marriages and military promotions.  Its obituaries of the deceased laid the foundation for the later Dictionary of National Biography and are a major source for the lives and deaths of thousands of 18th century people.  This talk from Julian Pooley provides an introduction to the magazine, explores its value for family and local historians and uncovers hidden stories of Kingston’s people and Surrey’s history throughout the Georgian period.
Julian Pooley is Public Services and Engagement Manager at Surrey History Centre in Woking and has been a professional archivist for thirty-five years. He has a particular interest in the history of the book trade and the work of early local historians and has published widely in the field of eighteenth century antiquarian and biographical research. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and Honorary Visiting Fellow at the Centre for English Local History at the University of Leicester. He is currently editing a series of volumes on ‘Surrey in the ‘Gentleman’s Magazine’ for Surrey Record Society.
Tickets must be booked in advance. Booking and further information is available by emailing Paul (paulhowardlang1011@gmail.com). The talk is presented by the Surbiton and District Historical
Society. Non-members are asked to contribute £2 when they attend events.
