Faith in friendship
See women age 40 years before your very eyes in a production by new theatre company Lighten Up.
Two-Headed, written by award-winning American playwright Julie Jensen, explores the relationship between two Mormons in the late 19th century.
Set in Utah, it follows the friendship of the two women, first as 10-year-olds and then at 10-year intervals until they reach their half centuries, as each find their place in an intolerant, patriarchal society where polygamy prevails.
The women’s friendship is well and truly tested when Hettie (Liz McMullen) marries Lavinia’s (Noor Lawson) father - which the latter considers a breach of trust - and a dark secret also stirs up anger and resentment.
Lawson, a graduate of acting from Thames Valley University, said: “The production relies heavily on the performer’s ability to work physically and take on the changing characterisation of the women as they age.
“The play is a remarkable comment on the strains of friendship under faith, with moments of hilarity and horror.
“It has elements of comedy and tragedy, but not in an obvious way. It is understated, touching and sometimes shocking.”
The play is suitable for over 16s.
