Six in the City

Fri 26 Jun 2009

Six of the best

We can’t promise a wardrobe full of Manolos at the cornerHOUSE this month, but we can promise a roller coaster ride of emotions similar to those of Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her gaggle of girlfriends in the cult TV series Sex and the City.

Except this isn’t Sex and the City, it’s Six in the City. And there aren’t just four chums – as the title of the show suggests, there are six.

Six in the City at the arts centre in Douglas Road, Tolworth, is a show which tells the story of the rich tapestry of life through contemporary and classic musical theatre with a dash of pop too.

Songs from hit shows like Hairspray, Starlight Express, and The Last 5 Years feature, and even Amy Winehouse gets a name check.

Six in the City is the first show by Interval Productions, a group set up to bridge the gap between amateurs and professionals, and to form a platform for future stars.

“The show features some songs you will know, and some songs you won’t, but there’s definitely something for everyone,” said musical director Tori Allen-Martin.

“Six in the City is relateable; it’s about life and romance and all things in between… break ups and make ups, betrayal, trust, friendship, lust, and falling in and out of love.

“Let six smart, sassy, stunning ladies tell you the ins and outs of making up and breaking up, of losing and of loving, through some of the most exciting contemporary musical theatre numbers, with a few surprises along the way.”

Tori’s most recent show, Time of the Month, a cabaret at Epsom Playhouse, raised an impressive £1,000 for Breast Cancer Care research.

For her latest production she is working in conjunction with Ellie Verkek, a graduate of the Royal College of Music with extensive experience in musical theatre.
