Double Sided

Fri 3 Apr 2009

Double act gives a different point of view

Talented duo Julie Ross and Mark Lester bring their singing and songwriting talents to the cornerHOUSE on Friday, April 3 for an evening of musical cabaret.

The pair, who have appeared in venues such as the Royal Festival Hall, Ronnie Scott’s and Pizza on the Park, will perform an eclectic mix of jazz, blues, music theatre, comedy and New York-style cabaret, as well as their own original work, at the arts centre in Douglas Road, Tolworth.

Julie and Mark are on a return visit to the cornerHOUSE after entertaining the audiences as part of a 25-strong City Lit A Cappella choir in March.

Both have a solid background in music. Julie has performed as a solo artist in London cabaret venues including the Jermyn Street Theatre and the Etcetera Theatre, while pianist/composer Mark’s work covers a broad spectrum from classical to jazz, and comedy to pop. His recent album Something Else, featuring some of the UK’s top jazz musicians, has been well received.

Double Sided is an evening of entertainment featuring a diverse collection of songs ‑ hilarious, moving, philosophical, often looking at life from unexpected angles, and covering a wide range of musical styles. Songs from writers such as Dorothy Fields, Amanda McBroom, Dillie Keane (from Fascinating Aida), and Carole King will feature, including original work by Mark.

The show at the cornerHOUSE will be the first time the pair perform as a double-act.

“Some of the songs are well known, others much less so, and some are brand new,” said Julie, who will be including excerpts from her most recent one-woman show Don’t Ask the Lady..!, which is a celebration of female songwriters.

“It’s a somewhat offbeat look at life from the viewpoint of songwriters old and new – often ‘the other side of the story’ – funny and uplifting with some great tunes!”
