Stories from Malawi

Fri 8 - Sat 9 May 2009

Tell it like it is

Gather round the campfire for an evening of storytelling at the cornerHOUSE in May.

Storytellers will transport you to Africa, as they conjure up vivid tales of life in Malawi. The stories will be brought to life by performances from Kingston schoolchildren.

The Landirani Trust, a Surbiton-based charity, is holding Stories from Malawi to raise awareness about the plight of Malawi’s orphans. The charity supports 3,000 children by providing education, health care, water and sanitation in 13 centres 20km north west of the capital Lilongwe.

Apart from the storytelling, there will also be a film about a Malawi village, as well as exhibitions of photography and art.

Pip Whately of the Landirani Trust, said: “Nicky Hobhouse’s photos are truly breathtaking and give a fantastic insight into the lives of the people of Malawi, while Adam Newton’s pictures really capture the mood of Malawian art and life.”

Adam’s illustrations appear in books which the trust has produced for a school pack to accompany the event. The books are for sale and he will be signing copies at the shows. Nicky Hobhouse’s photographs are also available to buy.

Stories from Malawi is on from Friday, May 8 at 7.30pm and Saturday, May 9 at 4pm and again at 7.30pm.

All funds raised from the event will go to help orphans in Malawi.
